Why We Sail

We are living through a time of profound transition.

Old systems are being questioned. Fear and separation shape much of our collective reality. Yet everywhere, people are imagining new ways of living, relating, and belonging to this Earth.

Perhaps the world doesn't only need new solutions. Perhaps it also needs more people courageous enough to live differently.

And that begins within each of us.

For thousands of years, cultures around the world have used rites of passage to mark moments of transformation.

Some happen in solitude, deep in the forest.

Ours happens in community at sea.

What Is a Rite of Passage?

A passage that takes us out of our ordinary lives, across a threshold of discovery, and back into the world with a new perspective.

Step away
Leave familiar routines, roles, and expectations behind.
Question
Explore what matters, what still serves you, and what you're ready to let go of.
Reimagine
Make space for new perspectives, ideas, and possibilities.
Return
Bring your discoveries and gifts into the way you choose to live.

It's Time to Go Remote.

To trade artificial intelligence for nature's wisdom. A screen for the vast horizon. Full minds for open hearts.

We cross the ocean not to escape the world, but to return with a greater capacity to contribute to the world we wish to create.

02 · Our First Passage

Atlantic Crossing 2027

Tilvera Expeditions
Our first collaboration

Piratas do Amor × Tilvera Expeditions

15 October – 9 November 2027 · 25 days

On the open ocean, the crossing becomes an invitation to also cross your inner seas.

What new possibilities lie on the horizon for the way you want to inhabit this Earth?

Together with 14 fellow crew members, we sail across the Atlantic from Cape Verde to Salvador, Brazil, with a stop in Fernando de Noronha.

Our home for the crossing is Tilvera, an extraordinary 22-metre steel expedition vessel.

Here, the ocean becomes our teacher.

What might the ocean teach you?

The Four Dimensions of the Journey

During this crossing, we learn by doing, observing, questioning, sharing and creating. Guided by nature, we explore the wonders of the world above and below us, within and without.

A journey that weaves together science, adventure, spirituality and art.

Because the more we discover about the world around us, the more we may discover about ourselves, and perhaps remember that we were never separate after all.

Looking up into Tilvera’s sails

01 — Sailing & Navigation

Learning to find our way.

Crossing an ocean is an adventure in itself.

We become part of the crew, learning to steer, trim sails, read the wind, plot our position on nautical charts and navigate through ever-changing conditions.

Along the way, we explore the art of navigation, from modern instruments to ancient techniques, discovering how sailors once found their way across the vast ocean.

02 — Exploring Life & the Cosmos

Discovering the Wonders of Our Living Planet

Together with marine biologist Belén, we explore the hidden world of the ocean, from microscopic organisms to magnificent whales, from seabirds that migrate extraordinary distances to the planets and stars illuminating our nights.

We discover how the ocean sustains life on Earth, explore the interconnected web of marine life, and rediscover the wonders of the natural world and our place within it.

03 — Inner Exploration

The journey inward.

With fewer distractions, we practice self-awareness and explore new layers of our consciousness. We laugh at our own absurdities, play with the masks we wear to fit into society, and challenge the invisible walls we've built around ourselves.

Through sharing circles, journaling and moments of reflection, we invite ourselves to look at life from fresh perspectives.

04 — Creative Expression

Give shape to what emerges.

Creativity isn't reserved for artists. It's a way of exploring possibilities and bringing something new into the world.

Inspired by the other three dimensions, and whenever the weather allows, we make space to experiment with different forms of expression.

Write a poem. Sketch the horizon. Compose a song. Tell a story. Imagine a project. Or simply play with an idea that has been waiting for your attention.

What is asking to be born through you?

The ocean is the only place on Earth where humans cannot build walls.

03 · Life Aboard

All Hands on Deck

At sea, time stops working like it does on land.

An Atlantic crossing is a shared undertaking. Everyone contributes to keeping the boat moving and life aboard working.

Life aboard brings the Pirate Code into small, everyday choices: taking your watch, asking for help, caring for a tired crewmate.

Guided conversations help us reflect on what we notice, how we respond and what we want to practise when we return to land.

04 · The Pillars of the Experience

The Pirate Code

Every pirate needs a compass.

The Pirate Code guides how we meet uncertainty, contribute to the crew and care for the world around us.

The Pirate Journey, our facilitated method rooted in the Pirate Code, brings reflection, art and play into life aboard.

Five principles to practise aboard and carry into everyday life.

1Choose Love Over Fear

Love is a choice.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the commitment to navigate despite it.

Again and again, we practice choosing love over fear, at sea and on land.

2Show up!

We bring our full selves and don't dim our light.

We speak our truth, take initiative and offer our gifts.

3Break the Pattern

We question the default, let the masks fall and switch off autopilot.

The pirate doesn't wait for permission to imagine another way with curiosity, art, and play.

4Believe In Miracles

Life is a dream.

We are all sparks of the divine.

We walk in wonder and with unshakable faith, allowing the unknown to show us the way.

5Stay Humble

We are a drop in the ocean, a fart in the wind, future compost.

From setting sails to washing dishes, no task is beneath anyone.

To serve is to love. To give is to receive.

Press the heart

Voices from Past Voyages

The crossing ends. The stories stay with us.

Sailing surrounded by authentic people, floating with an infinite horizon, obeying & surrendering to nature is to me what we need to come back to our true human essence.
